Load weight and geometry
Include rigging, spreader bars and attachments in the lift weight, and describe the load's size and centre of gravity.

Choose a crane from the load, radius and set-up area, not from the headline capacity on the machine. A 100 t crane can lift far less than 100 t at working radius.
Crane Hire in Australia covers a range of machine types and sizes. These are the most commonly hired, and what each is typically used for:
| Machine | Typical use |
|---|---|
| Franna / pick-and-carry cranes | Quick set-up lifts, steel placement and moving loads around a site |
| City & all-terrain cranes | Tight urban sites, HVAC units, precast and roof trusses |
| Slewing mobile cranes (50–500 t+) | Heavy lifts, bridge beams and industrial installation |
| Crawler cranes | Long-duration heavy lifting, piling and wind farm work |
| Truck-mounted (Hiab) cranes | Deliver-and-place of materials, containers and site sheds |
| Tower cranes | Multi-storey construction over long programmes |
A useful enquiry tells the supplier what has to be achieved, where the equipment will work and what could change the selection. Include dimensions, quantities, material conditions, dates, the delivery route, unloading area and any site compliance requirements.
Compare offers on the complete configuration: machine, attachments, operator (for wet or dry hire), transport both ways, minimum hours, fuel and return conditions. See how to read a plant hire quote.

Radius from the crane's centre to the load's final position controls capacity. Measure it on a site plan.
Outrigger loads, underground services, power lines and public areas determine the set-up, and often the crane size.

A Franna is an Australian pick-and-carry crane that can travel with a load on its hook. It's widely used for quick lifts, steel erection and moving materials around a site.
Most mobile crane hire in Australia is wet (operated) hire, supplied with a licensed crane operator and often a dogman or rigger. Dry crane hire is uncommon outside some smaller truck-mounted units.
Many sites and principal contractors require a lift plan, especially for heavy, complex or public-interface lifts. Crane companies can often prepare one.
Usually hourly with a minimum call-out (often 3–4 hours), plus travel, rigging crew, permits, escorts and any additional counterweight transport.
